OUTLANDER
— BASICS —
— FIRST IMPRESSIONS —
APPEARANCE Lord John is described as a man of slight build and shorter-than-average height (about 5'6"), with thick blond hair and large, long-lashed, light blue eyes. Several characters observe that his features, of fine bones and fair skin, are "saved from girlishness only by the firm set of mouth and jaw".
Because he is played by David Berry in the TV show Outlander, and he looks perfect for Lord John other than the color of his hair, his hair color will be written as a sort of ambiguous "light" to stay true to canon but also not be confusing with regards to the icons.
After a lifetime of soldiering, Lord John has collected a number of scars, though most of them are usually hidden underneath his clothing in polite company.
CLOTHING Lord John dresses well, and is almost always immaculately put together, which means it is telling when he is not. He is a member of the nobility and is accustomed to having a valet to help himself dress, although he is capable of dressing without one. A commissioned army officer, he is serious about keeping his uniform well put together as well. He is handsome, accustomed to being well-dressed and turning heads. While it is normal for men of his time to wear their hair powdered or cropped short under a wig, John wears his long and frequently held back with a velvet ribbon, a leather tie, or in a queue.
DEMEANOR Lord John is a kind, gentle, sensitive, honorable man. He is also a military man, having lived his life in the shadow of the army and holds his duty -- to his King, to his family, and to the people he loves -- the highest above all things. He is loyal and loving to the people he cares about, but a fierce fighter when called to action. He is a warrior in the army, after all.
He wears many hats. An officer in the army, a spy for the British government for a time, and at one time the Royal Governor of Jamaica. He is also a father, a brother, and once, a husband. He is a homosexual man, at a time when to be so is punishable by death. Needless to say, he is good at keeping secrets.
AURAL He was born and raised the son of a Duke, as such he was educated and has a very proper British accent of the time (1700's). He has a soft baritone voice, but he can still be whip-crack hard to put people in their place when he needs to be. He is a commanding officer and a father after all!
OLFACTORY Lord John smells like a gentleman, and yet not. He keeps himself clean and uses nice, expensive, possibly even floral-scented soap. He has long hair so it may linger. He also wears a lot of fabric layers so the smell of his day usually clings to him, so he probably smells like some combination of: coffee, horse, leather, dog, sweat, brandy/wine, old books, wool, bergamot.
